Mock marking and moderation routine for a Biology department
Heads of Biology and second markers · Half a department meeting per mock series
A department routine for marking CCEA Biology mocks consistently: standardisation sample, split marking, moderation check and a class gap analysis.
Consistency between markers matters more to predicted-grade accuracy than the strictness of any individual marker. This routine takes one meeting and removes most of the drift.
- 1.Before marking: everyone marks the same three scripts — one strong, one middling, one weak — against the CCEA mark scheme.
- 2.Compare totals. Discuss only the questions where markers differ by two or more marks, and agree a shared interpretation of the mark scheme wording.
- 3.Split marking by question, not by class, so each question is interpreted the same way for every student.
- 4.Second-mark 10% of scripts, chosen across the grade range, and record any systematic difference.
- 5.Enter marks per question, not per paper — per-question data is what makes a gap analysis possible.
- 6.Produce a class gap analysis: rank questions by mean percentage, and reteach the bottom three.
- 7.Give students the mark scheme and 20 minutes to self-mark their own paper before you hand back your marks. The comparison is the teaching moment.
Keep the per-question data across series. Over two years it shows you which specification points your teaching order consistently under-serves, which is more useful than a grade distribution.
