A six-week CCEA Biology revision plan that fits around school

Six weeks is enough for CCEA Biology if the hours go on retrieval and past papers rather than rewriting notes. Here is a schedule that assumes you are still in school and have other subjects.

The principle: test first, read second

Rereading notes feels productive because the material feels familiar. Familiarity is not recall. The evidence is consistent that retrieval practice — closing the book and writing what you know — produces far more durable learning per hour.

So every session in this plan starts with a blank page, not with the textbook. The textbook is what you check against afterwards.

Weeks 1–2: content sweep by unit weighting

  • Spend time in proportion to the marks. At A-level, A2 1 and A2 2 carry 24% each while the practical units carry 8% and 12%.
  • Per topic: 10 minutes blank-page recall, 10 minutes filling gaps from your notes, 10 minutes on past-paper questions from that topic only.
  • Keep a single 'gaps' list. It becomes the revision plan for weeks 5 and 6.

Weeks 3–4: past papers by topic, then whole papers

Move from topic-tagged questions to whole papers under timed conditions — one per week per unit is plenty alongside school. Mark strictly against the CCEA mark scheme and sort every lost mark into knowledge, technique, or carelessness.

Technique errors are the fastest to fix. If several lost marks share a command word, spend a session on that command word rather than on the biology.

Week 5: the gaps list only

Nothing new. Work only through the list you have been building, re-testing each item once, then again two days later. Anything you get right twice comes off the list.

Week 6: rehearsal, not cramming

  • One full paper per unit, timed, in the morning if your exam is in the morning.
  • Re-read your own model answers to extended-response questions rather than the textbook.
  • Sleep is a revision technique. Late-night cramming costs more in recall than it adds in coverage.
